How To Assess Your “Age”

Everyone knows someone that seems to have aged unbelievably, enviably well. They’re confident, stylish, energetic and full of the stamina typical of someone half their age. Are they as old as the years they’ve lived? What’s their true age?

The passage of time isn’t the only indicator of age. Sure, the number of birthdays you celebrate adds up to your chronological age, but your perceptual age and your biological age are equally influential on the way you age. Your biological age is a measure of how your body has aged, right down to your DNA. Your perceptual age is how old you feel.

Thankfully, unlike the passage of time, your biological age and your perceptual age are largely within your control. But to determine a new destination, it’s best to understand where you are now. Evaluate your current true age and from there you can determine how old you’d like to feel and, using the Younger In 8 Weeks Program, how to get there.

The Younger In 8 Weeks book contains a 40-question quiz and a worksheet that will help you suss out exactly how “old” you really are, as well as the steps you can take to feel your best, no matter your age. Here are a few questions pulled right from the quiz to get you started.

Question 1

Which of the choices below best describes your daily diet?

  1. Whole foods – veggies and fruits, nuts and beans, brown rice and other whole grains, plain yogurt.
  2. A mix of whole and processed/packaged foods.
  3. Mostly processed/takeout/convenience foods.

The answer to this question will speak to the health of your diet and how it can work either for or against you as you age. A whole foods, plant-based diet is going to take you farther than one full of processed, packaged foods. Remember to be honest with yourself at this point. If you don’t have an ideal diet, don’t feel ashamed. Now is the time to take control of the things you put into your body.

Question 2

How would you assess your fitness level?

  1. I’m not as fit as I was when I was 20 – I’m fitter!
  2. I feel slower and stiffer than I used to, but I’m still pretty active.
  3. I have a bad back (or bum knee/shoulder/foot), but doesn’t everyone slow down as they get older?

In the same way that your current diet is a barometer for aging, your current fitness level is as well. Once again, don’t feel discouraged if you’re not in better shape than you were in your twenties. See this question as an invitation for self-reflection and an opportunity to make a change if you need to.

Question 3

Which of the below best describes your regular skincare routine?

  1. Cleanser, antioxidant serum, broad-spectrum sunscreen, retinoid cream, moisturizer, eye cream.
  2. Two or more of the above.
  3. One or none of the above.

You might not consider your skincare routine to be an integral part of determining your age, but your true age is reflected in your skin. Caring for your skin is one of the ways you can take your perceptual (and in some cases even your biological) age into your hands.

Question 4

How purposeful does life feel right now?

  1. Very – I enjoy my daily work/job, and I take part in several activities and organizations.
  2. Somewhat – I know my family needs me, but life sometimes seems a little been there, done that.
  3. Not very – these days, I feel adrift and unsure of my purpose in life.

Your sense of purpose, your drive and desires, mean as much to your age as the food you eat or the products you put on your face. Finding a purpose can bleed into other areas of your life, inspiring you to make the changes necessary to be your healthiest, best self.
